What travel insurance costs and what to insure

Answers from TravallamaINS, a licensed independent travel insurance agency, to common questions about this. Benefits, limits and conditions differ by plan and by state, and the plan document governs.

How much does travel insurance cost?

The price depends on your trip cost, each traveler's age, your state, and the plan you choose, so there is no single rate.

You can see the exact price for your trip in about a minute at travallamains.com. Getting a quote does not buy anything.

What determines the price?

The insurance company calculates the price from the details you enter: each traveler's age, the trip cost you insure, your state of residence, your travel dates, the plan, and any optional upgrades you add.

The price shown on our site is the insurance company's price for those details.

What trip cost should I insure?

Insure the full prepaid, non-refundable cost of the trip: the program or tour, airfare, hotels, cruise fare and prepaid excursions.

  • Enter each traveler's own share, regardless of who is paying: the amount charged for that traveler. If everyone is charged the same, divide the total evenly.
  • If you know the full price of the trip, insure all of it, not only the deposit you have paid so far. Cancel for Any Reason on WorldTrips requires this.
  • Do not include refundable amounts or money you will spend at the destination.
  • If you add arrangements later, add them to your plan.

Do I have to insure the whole trip?

You can insure less than the full cost, but it limits what you can claim and can cost you important benefits.

  • WorldTrips Explore and Elevate: Cancel for Any Reason requires that you insured 100% of the cost of the travel arrangements known to you when you buy the upgrade.
  • Trawick Pathway Premier: Cancel for Any Reason requires insuring all prepaid trip costs that are subject to cancellation penalties. On Trawick's Florida plans, trip interruption and supplier bankruptcy benefits also require insuring all prepaid trip costs.
  • The New York versions of the Travel Insured and Trawick plans require insuring all prepaid trip costs for the pre-existing condition waiver.
  • A claim pays only up to the trip cost you insured.

Should I insure flights I booked with points or miles?

Points, miles, vouchers and credits are not counted as trip payments, so do not include their value in your trip cost. Insure only what you paid in money, such as the taxes and fees on an award ticket.

Some plans reimburse the fee an airline charges to redeposit your miles after a covered cancellation: up to $250 on Trawick Pathway Premier and WorldTrips Explore and Elevate, and up to $500 on the WorldTrips New York plans.

Why does it cost so much more for older travelers?

The insurance companies price each traveler by age, and the price generally rises with age. Each traveler is priced on their own age and trip cost.

The quote shows the total for everyone on the plan.

How much extra does Cancel for Any Reason cost?

The exact price is shown when you open Optional upgrades on a plan card, and the plan total updates when you add it. It is priced by the insurance company from your trip details.

Do you offer discounts?

We do not set or discount the price. The price shown is the insurance company's price for your trip details.

If your budget is the concern, compare the plans on our site: the lower-priced plan in each pair has lower benefit limits rather than a discount.

Can I buy a plan just for medical coverage, without insuring my trip cost?

Possibly. Travel Insured's plans can be issued with a $0 trip cost, which keeps the medical, evacuation, delay and baggage benefits without trip cancellation. Trip interruption is then limited (on Platinum and the New York plan, to $500 toward a return air ticket).

Our online quote asks for a trip cost, so for a medical-only quote please use Request a personal quote or email info@travallamains.com and a licensed agent will help.

Are taxes, fees and tips part of the trip cost?

Include taxes, fees and gratuities only if you prepaid them and they are non-refundable. Amounts you pay at the destination are not part of the insured trip cost.
